Regenerative Injection Therapies

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a regenerative injection therapy that stimulates the proliferation of collagen, therefore, helping to stimulate the growth of new tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. By using dextrose, a hyperosmolar irritant that creates microdamage, and procaine (or another analgesic), the microdamage stimulates the inflammatory cascade and tissue healing. This therapy can be helpful in acute and chronic tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries. It is an ideal therapy on a grade 1-2 tendon or ligament injury where surgery is not indicated but the severity of the injury has a large impact on quality of life and activities of daily living.

Ideally prolotherapy injections are done every 14 days to allow for the inflammation to decrease and the tissue to recover between treatments. As tissue regenerates it can be increased to every 3 weeks, 4 weeks and then 5 weeks. It is likely to need between 3 and 6 treatments but depends on the person and the injury.

 Prolotherapy can be helpful for:

-       Acute sprain / strain injuries

-       Chronic sprain / strain injuries

-       Arthritis / joint degeneration (PRP is helpful)

Areas currently treated by Dr. Lauren Goss, ND:

-       Lower extremity: ankle / foot, knee, hip

-       Upper extremity: wrist / hand, elbow, shoulder

-       Intra and extraarticular injections

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) - Now offering via the angel system!

PRP is an advanced regenerative injection therapy which can help speed up healing of tendon and ligament injuries, and can be an effective treatment option for osteoarthritis. It starts with a blood draw and the blood is then put into a centrifuge, which separates the plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The platelets contain many helpful proteins, called growth factors. By isolating the platelets (and their many growth factors), we get a much higher concentration of platelets, which can then be injected into the injured joint to increase healing.

PRP can be helpful for:

  • Chronic ligament / tendon injuries - when surgery is not a great option

  • Meniscus injuries

  • Osteoarthritis / joint degeneration

Perineural therapy (John Lyttogt, MD Method)

Perineural therapy is a regenerative injection therapy that can be  a helpful  neuropathic pain therapy and neurofascial therapy. Subcutaneous injections, near superficial nerves (C fibres), can have beneficial impacts on joints, by improving joint function and reducing neuropathic pain. For a joint to function properly, it needs a sufficient blood and nutrient supply, effective drainage to remove metabolic waste, and proper nerve function. C fibres are superficial nerves that send peripheral signals to the central nervous system and produce dull, aching and burning pain sensations. They are right under the epidermis and due to fascial “self-strangulation”, C fibres can be great sources of chronic pain, joint dysfunction, and neuropathic pain. Perineural injections can desensitize these specific nerve receptors and help minimize neuropathic pain. Please get in contact for more information!
